Don't Believe the Hype: Canvas Apps Aren't Dead, They Just Grew Up

Scroll through LinkedIn's power platform communities for five minutes and you’ll see the same enthusiastic claim: "Canvas Apps are dead."

With Microsoft pushing Code Apps, letting pro devs write custom React in VS Code—and layering AI over everything, it’s easy to get swept up on the hype and assume drag-and-drop is finished. But before we write off Canvas Apps, it’s worth asking a simple question: are they actually dead, or are people just distracted by the newest shiny object?

I don't buy the whole "Canvas is dead". Architectural decisions ought to be driven by risk, complexity, and support burden, not by whether someone happens to know React or Power Fx.

If you try to force every single business problem into a pro-code framework, you end up re-creating the exact IT bottlenecks the Power Platform (or any low/no code platform) was supposed to solve.

Let's Be Honest About Why IT Hates Canvas Apps

To understand the current backlash, you have to acknowledge why so many IT teams want to throw Canvas Apps in the bin. They’ve been burnt before.

In the early days, Canvas was the only real option on the table. As always happens, enthusiastic & clever people pushed it way beyond what it was meant to do. What starts as a neat departmental idea morphed into a massive, tangled, business-critical mess. Oh and the entire business is now using it!

Trying to cram high-complexity logic into a low-code UI creates something that is nearly impossible to maintain.

IT teams were left carrying the support burden for these fragile, chaotic apps so It’s no wonder pro developers look at those past disasters and say, "Let's just build everything in Code Apps. At least then we can keep it under control."

But, in my opinion, the issue wasn't the tool. It was how people were using it.

The Three Tiers of Modern Power Apps

Instead of treating these tools as rivals competing for the same spot, it makes much more sense to view them as tools in a toolbox or a natural progression. A sensible digital strategy splits development across three distinct tiers:

The AI Productivity Paradox in Pro-Code

There’s a dangerous idea floating around senior leadership right now: "If we give our pro developers AI tools, they’ll build things so fast that they'll have loads more time."

On the ground, it just doesn't work like that. What we’re seeing instead is an AI productivity paradox: teams are moving faster internally, but finished outcomes aren't landing any quicker.

AI makes typing out code or generating boilerplate setup lightning fast. But it also introduces two massive issues:

First, expectations have gone through the roof. Because management knows devs have AI, they expect twice the output in half the time with fewer people.

Second, the administrative overhead has exploded. An agentic tool can output hundreds of lines of code in seconds, but a human still has to read, test, and validate every bit of it. Pull requests are massive now. Devs are spending hours sifting through AI code to check for security bugs, logic flaws, and compliance issues. One dev’s 10x output just turns into another dev’s 10x review queue.

Devs are caught in the middle. They're drowning in the admin of reviewing generated code while fighting unreasonable deadlines from leadership. Handing a stretched dev team an AI assistant won't magically free up their calendar to build a simple holiday tracker for HR. It just gives them more code to check.

Which brings us back to why Citizen Devs and Canvas Apps are so important. You can't rely entirely on pro devs, because their capacity gets eaten up by enterprise work and code review admin the second it opens up.

The Governance Graduation Matrix

Canvas is often the safest architectural choice simply because it minimises how much custom code your organisation has to maintain long-term. But to avoid building another unmaintainable mess, you need clear rules about what citiven developers can do, what they can't do and how to identify when an app has outgrown Tier 1.

A straightforward way to think about this is balancing Complexity against Criticality:

The Real Advantage: Speed and Progression

The real win here isn't choosing one option over the others, it's how they work together.

When a departmental Canvas app starts crossing the line into a mission-critical tool (and the good ones always do), the business hands that working prototype over to the pro-dev team or the builder team (depending on where it best lands as a next step) and a migration plan is made and executed. Rebuilding an app as a Code App is remarkably fast when the business logic is already tested and proven in the real world.

At the same time, this framework creates a clear upskilling path. Citizen devs naturally progress into Tier 2 power builders with support and upskilling opportunities. You end up building internal talent rather than constantly paying top markups to hire externally, keeping your most expensive pro-dev resources focused strictly on high-value, high-risk systems.

Rethinking the Path Forward

Code Apps aren't here to kill Canvas. They're here to make architectural choices more honest. They give us a proper home for complex code so we can stop abusing low-code tools.

We need to stop sending every small idea into an IT backlog, and we need to stop letting Canvas apps grow into unmanaged beasts without governance.

Have a look at your current app landscape. Where are the bloated Canvas monoliths that need handed off to a pro dev? And where are the business bottlenecks that a citizen developer could fix by tomorrow afternoon if you just gave them the tools to try?
